On Wednesday, GOP Senators Tom Cotton (R-AR), Mitch McConnell (R-KY), and Jerry Moran (R-KS) reintroduced the Justice for <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/9-11" target="_blank" rel="noopener">9/11</a> Act, originally introduced by Cotton and McConnell last August, to cancel any plea deals made between the Biden administration and the Guantanamo Bay inmates who planned the 9/11/2001 attacks. Rep. Mike Lawler (R-N.Y.) is introducing companion legislation in the House.
Three detainees at Guantanamo Bay, including alleged 9/11 architect Khalid Sheikh Mohammad, had filed plea deals. Last week, a military appeals court ruled that the Pentagon could not reverse the deals reached by military prosecutors and defense attorneys.
The Act <a href="https://www.cotton.senate.gov/imo/media/doc/11_plea_deal_bill_reintro.pdf" target="_blank" rel="noopener">states</a>:

Notwithstanding the provisions of section 949h of title 10, United States Code, any plea agreement entered into by Khalid Shaikh Mohammad, Walid Muhammad Salih Mubarak Bin ‘Attash, or Mustafa Ahmed Adam al Hawsawi for actions involving the terrorist attack on September 11, 2001, and its related judgment, shall not preclude the trial of such individual under chapter 47A of such title or any other provision of law for that terrorist attack. Notwithstanding any other provision of law, in any trial of Khalid Shaikh Mohammad, Walid Muhammad Salih Mubarak Bin ‘Attash, or Mustafa Ahmed Adam al Hawsawi under chapter 47A of title 10, United States Code, or any other provision of law for the terrorist attack of September 11, 2001, a sentence of death shall be available. 
Notwithstanding any other provision of law, in the case of any sentence imposed on Khalid Shaikh Mohammad, Walid Muhammad Salih Mubarak Bin ‘Attash, or Mustafa Ahmed Adam al Hawsawi, such individual shall be held at United States Naval Station, Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, in solitary confinement; provided no contact with foreign nationals; and provided no psychological treatment except that specifically authorized by medical authorities at United States Naval Station, Guantanamo Bay; and shall not be transferred to the continental United States or any other country.

“Giving a plea deal to the terrorist masterminds behind 9/11 is disgraceful and an insult to the victims of the attacks, as well at those who served to avenge them,” Cotton <a href="https://www.cotton.senate.gov/news/press-releases/cotton-mcconnell-lawler-reintroduce-bill-to-stop-joe-biden-from-releasing-9/11-terrorists" target="_blank" rel="noopener">stated</a>. “These monsters should have faced justice decades ago; instead, Joe Biden has set the stage to let them go free. My bill will stop this travesty and prevent the Biden administration from replenishing the ranks of our terrorist enemies any further on his way out the door.”

“The court’s decision to uphold the plea deal for three 9/11 conspirators is alarming,” Moran added. “In addition to the plea deal, the Biden administration continues to use its final days in power to release some of the world&#8217;s most violent terrorists from Guantanamo Bay. These men should face trial for their crimes, and Congress must act quickly to pass this important legislation.”
“September 11th is a date that will forever be seared in our national memory, especially for New Yorkers,” Lawler stated. “For the Biden-Harris Administration to have offered a plea deal without the death penalty to the very people who planned the attacks that took the lives of almost 3,000 is a betrayal of our cops, firefighters, and 9/11 victims and their families. The Justice for 9/11 Act will nullify this horrendous plea deal and prevent any future ones from being offered to those who perpetrated this heinous attack.”
“A hearing is scheduled for later this week at Guantanomo Bay, where Mohammad and two other defendants could plead guilty in separate hearings, with the death penalty removed as a possible punishment,” Fox News <a href="//FE2DFBB2-BFEC-43AE-BAEC-9AFFDA6DD542/v" target="_blank" rel="noopener">noted</a>, adding, “The administration announced on Monday 11 Yemeni detainees, including two alleged bodyguards for Usama bin Laden, would be resettled in Oman, after being held for two decades without charges.”

Donald Trump just gave one of the greatest press conferences in American history. He talked more in this press conference than Joe Biden has for four years. He spoke quite coherently and cogently.
The press conference was a doozy. It was wonderful in so many ways.
Trump is going to instruct the federal government to rename the Gulf of Mexico to the Gulf of America, and I am here for it. It is fantastic. If you look at a map, about 65% of the coastline along the Gulf of Mexico is in America.
Who&#8217;s going to stop us from renaming it? Mexico? Sure. They can’t even balance the budget or stop the cartels from running their country.
But that&#8217;s not the only item on the Manifest Destiny Agenda for the Trump administration that I love.
I love that Trump has been talking about making Canada the 51st state. I know that Justin Trudeau is out there tweeting how it&#8217;ll never be the 51st state, but he has no say in the matter because when we invade, he will be shipped to work the Panama Canal.
More America is better. Greenland, a vital place territorially, is on Trump’s list. Why not? The United States spends money on the military defense of Greenland, and we have military bases in Greenland. We use Greenland’s northern border in order to protect Arctic shipping. Greenland is very important because as ice melts in the Arctic Circle, there will be brand-new North Atlantic shipping lanes which have drawn interest from Russia and China. Either Russia and China are going to have an impact there, or we are. Arctic shipping has increased, according to <a href="https://www.forbes.com/sites/saradorn/2025/01/08/why-does-trump-want-to-buy-greenland-heres-what-to-know-as-don-jr-arrives-on-island/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Forbes</a>, 37% over the past decade.
In addition, Greenland is part of the strategically important Greenland-Iceland-UK gap, a choke point that Russian ships actually have to transit to travel from the Arctic Ocean to the Atlantic.
And Greenland has a plethora of untapped mineral resources. Those include copper, iron ore, diamonds, and oil. We should purchase Greenland.

The people of Greenland have been talking about independence for a very long time. If that were to happen, they would realign with the United States in a heartbeat. First of all, it&#8217;s better to live in the United States than it is to live in a principality of Denmark. Second, as far as security concerns to defend those Arctic Straits against Russia and China, do you think Denmark is going to go up against the Russians or the Chinese?
If that is a matter of national security for the United States, why not sell Greenland to the United States if you are Denmark?
Back in 1775, Denmark and Norway declared Greenland a colony. Greenland was then formally transferred from Norway to Denmark by a treaty in 1814. Denmark started trying to colonize the island in the 1880s.
But before the 1880s, a huge chunk was actually discovered by Americans. Charles Francis Hall saw northwest Greenland during the Polaris expedition, which was from 1871 to 1873. And another explorer named Robert Peary actually claimed much of the North.
The only reason that Denmark has any claim whatsoever to Greenland, as far as the United States is concerned, is because when the United States was interested in purchasing the Danish West Indies during World War I, Denmark required the U.S. to recognize its claim over the whole island of Greenland.
At the time, Peary, the explorer who discovered and claimed much of it, opposed the U.S. giving up the claim because the Monroe Doctrine said there should be no European interference in the Western Hemisphere.
He correctly suggested that we should have purchased the island outright. And then, as it turned out, we had to defend it anyway because in the early 1940s, Denmark had been conquered by the Nazis. Once that happened, the United States basically had to defend Greenland as its own principality because it was the only known significant source of a material called rhyolite. Because Germany was attempting to use the North Atlantic as a base during World War II, the United States actually did apply the Monroe Doctrine on European colonies in the North Atlantic Ocean.
By 1946, the joint chiefs of staff had listed Greenland and Iceland as essential international locations for American bases. In fact, when NATO was in its heyday, Greenland was seen as more important to both American and Canadian defense than some of the Western European countries. That was because the very, very north of Canada, the North American continent, gets pretty close to territory that is controlled by Russia.
In 1951, Greenland and the United States signed a treaty that gave the United States exclusive jurisdiction over defense areas within Greenland. So there is a significantly solid case that the United States actually ought to buy Greenland.
But there’s more. 
President Trump has made clear that he does not want the Panama Canal to be controlled by the Chinese. He&#8217;s half joking when he&#8217;s making fun of Justin Trudeau and talking about making Canada the 51st state, but the Greenland issue is actually a fairly serious proposal. And when it comes to the Panama Canal, there really is a serious problem. The Panama Canal was built with American labor and money. It was turned over idiotically by one of our worst presidents, Jimmy Carter.
The Panama Canal has run significantly worse since we turned it over to Panama. The Panamanians have turned over both ends of the canals to Chinese companies who could easily shut off the entrances and exits to the Panama Canal. 40% of all American container traffic goes through the Panama Canal. That&#8217;s a lot of American commerce moving through the Panama Canal.
If the United States were ever to get into a conflict with China, most shipping would cease because China would try to take control of the Taiwan Strait and the Strait of Malacca, which is basically the tip of the South China Sea. That would shut off another shipping route. If they could shut off shipping in the Western Hemisphere, they could absolutely cripple the American economy.

On foreign policy, Trump was asked about what he&#8217;s going to do if the hostages are not freed by Hamas by the time he takes office in just 13 days. 
President Trump <a href="https://www.mediaite.com/news/trump-vows-all-hell-will-break-out-if-hamas-hostages-not-released-before-he-takes-office-do-i-have-to-define-it-for-you/">answered</a>:
<blockquote>Do I have to define it for you? Look, all hell will break out. … If they’re not back by the time I get into office, all hell will break out in the Middle East. It will not be good for Hamas and it will not be good, frankly, for anyone. All hell will break out. I don’t have to say anymore, but that’s what it is. And they should have given them back a long time ago, they should have never taken them, there should have never been the attack on Oct. 7. People forget that, but there was, and many people [were] killed.</blockquote>
This is strength. Joe Biden never had any moral clarity about this because he&#8217;s a fool. Donald Trump, on the other hand, has moral clarity about this.
And this is the correct approach. If Hamas is not afraid, they&#8217;re not releasing the hostages. It is that simple. There&#8217;s nothing else that is going to make them release the hostages other than dire threats and action and allowing Israel to do exactly what it needs to do in the Gaza Strip.
And then Trump was asked about the possibility of a preemptive strike on the Iranian nuclear facilities if they were to ramp up their nuclear production. And Trump gave the correct answer on this one too.
Again, Trump gave more answers in this one press conference than Biden has given in four years. He made more intelligent statements in this press conference than Biden has ever said in his entire career. That’s because Biden was, is, and will be a dullard. 
President Trump explained that if Iran were to attempt a nuclear weapon, he wouldn’t tell the reporter what he would do because he&#8217;s the president, and he&#8217;s not going to tell some dumb reporter what he&#8217;s going to do because it&#8217;s a stupid question. That is correct.
Speaking of other good things, President Trump also had some words about Biden&#8217;s attempts to shut down drilling for oil off pretty much all of America&#8217;s Eastern seaboard on his way out. Trump said, we like to produce energy in America. American energy independence has made us less dependent on some of the worst places in the world. That is a good thing. And Biden is throttling America&#8217;s energy independence.

<a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/cnn" target="_blank" rel="noopener">CNN</a> is under fire as Navy veteran Zachary Young testifies in his $1 billion lawsuit against the network, telling judge and jury that a CNN report that aired November 11, 2021, had &#8220;destroyed his reputation and business.&#8221;
Young&#8217;s suit alleges that the segment — which aired on &#8220;The Lead&#8221; with anchor Jake Tapper and featured reporting by correspondent Alex Marquardt — incorrectly implied that he had profited illegally from his efforts to aid in the evacuation of &#8220;desperate Afghans&#8221; who were trying to flee the country in the wake of President Joe Biden&#8217;s disastrous military withdrawal from Afghanistan months earlier.
As <a href="https://www.foxnews.com/media/cia-trained-navy-veteran-details-very-devastating-impact-cnn-segment-had-his-life-labeled-criminal" target="_blank" rel="noopener">reported</a> by Fox News Digital, &#8220;14th Judicial Circuit Court Judge William S. Henry, who is presiding over the trial in Bay County, Florida, has already ruled that Young &#8216;did not act illegally or criminally&#8217; despite what the network reported on air. Judge Henry has also declared the court found Young &#8216;did not take money from Afghans.'&#8221;
CNN&#8217;s reporting painted a very different picture, however. Twice before the November 11 segment even aired, Tapper had teased a story about &#8220;desperate Afghans still trying to escape the country being preyed on by folks demanding that they pay up big time to get out.&#8221;
Tapper then introduced Marquardt&#8217;s report, saying, &#8220;Afghans trying to get out of the country face a black market full of promises, demands of exorbitant fees, and no guarantee of safety or success.&#8221;
Marquardt&#8217;s report focused on Young, claiming that the Navy veteran had asked for &#8220;prices well beyond the reach of most Afghans&#8221; in exchange for his efforts to help them escape the Taliban-controlled country.
&#8220;In a text message, he told CNN that Afghans trying to leave are expected to have sponsors pay for them,&#8221; Marquardt explained, also noting that Young had attributed the &#8220;volatile&#8221; high costs attached to evacuation to &#8220;environmental realities.&#8221;
Marquardt went on to say that Young had declined to share a detailed explanation of the costs, adding, &#8220;In another message, that person offering those evacuations, Zachary Young, he wrote, ‘Availability is extremely limited, and demand is high’… he goes on to say, ‘That’s how economics works, unfortunately.'&#8221;
The segment concluded with interviews of two anonymous Afghans — with whom Young says he never had contact — who told CNN that they hoped to evacuate family members from the country, but were afraid they could not afford to do so.
<a href="https://newsbusters.org/blogs/nb/nicholas-fondacaro/2025/01/07/facts-didnt-matter-testimony-cnn-defamation-trial-begins" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Young&#8217;s defense</a> is set to focus on a number of text messages that his attorneys say make it clear that some at the network were aware prior to airing the story that it was &#8220;full of holes.&#8221;
Young&#8217;s attorney Kyle Roche, during Tuesday&#8217;s opening statements, claimed that the CNN report was &#8220;reckless&#8221; and that the network had &#8220;set out to destroy Zach’s reputation.&#8221;
&#8220;They didn’t care about the truth. They cared about theater and they cared about ratings,&#8221; he said, previewing internal messages from CNN editors who stated that Marquardt&#8217;s report was &#8220;full of holes like Swiss cheese&#8221; and &#8220;80 percent emotion and 20 percent obscured fact.&#8221;
During Young&#8217;s testimony, which began Tuesday and continued on Wednesday, a series of messages between Marquardt and Young were presented as evidence. The exchange showed that Marquardt had told Young he planned to go ahead with the story, but then only gave him a two-hour window in which to respond to multiple questions.

Following the report, Young said on the stand that he had been in therapy and placed on medication after suffering multiple panic attacks a day. He also said that he&#8217;d not been able to work since the report came out — and that when he&#8217;d tried to offer his assistance with evacuations in Sudan, his posts were &#8220;flooded&#8221; with &#8220;hate echoing what CNN said&#8221; in the reports about him.

The hosts of left-wing political podcast &#8220;Pod Save America&#8221; — all of whom are veterans of former President Barack Obama&#8217;s administration — complained during a recent episode that President Joe Biden had given an award to former Rep. Liz Cheney (R-WY) rather than their old boss.
The three — Jon Favreau, Jon Lovett, and Tommy Vietor — agreed unanimously on one of the awards Biden chose to give: the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the nation&#8217;s highest civilian honor, to billionaire <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/biden-to-award-hillary-clinton-george-soros-with-presidential-medal-of-freedom" target="_blank" rel="noopener">George Soros</a>.
&#8220;Well-earned Medal of Freedom, if I do say so!&#8221; Lovett said.
Favreau, after noting that Soros was an investor, added, &#8220;There&#8217;s a good one.&#8221;
&#8220;He got one right,&#8221; Vietor agreed before pivoting to complain about the selection process: &#8220;It doesn’t make any sense. You can give it to living people, you can give it to dead people, you can give it to foreign nationals, Colin Powell got it twice for some reason, you can add a ‘with distinction’ flag with no real explanation for what that means.&#8221;
All three then grumbled about the fact that Biden chose to award Cheney — although she received a lesser award, the Presidential Citizens Medal — rather than returning the honor Obama showed Biden when he awarded him the <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/nbcs-lauer-wept-when-obama-honored-biden-hank-berrien" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Medal of Freedom</a>.
&#8220;Liz Cheney didn’t get the Medal of Freedom, she got the one just below it, which by the way, pissed off some resistance folks on Twitter. I bet Liz Cheney could use a pardon more than the f***ing medal!&#8221; Favreau cracked, referring to rumors that the White House had <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/biden-aides-discussing-preemptive-pardons-for-fauci-schiff-cheney-report" target="_blank" rel="noopener">considered &#8220;pre-emptive&#8221; pardons</a> for those against whom Trump might seek retribution.

The solution, all three agreed, was to have a more &#8220;objective&#8221; process in selecting those who might be honored for such awards: &#8220;If you want to make it special and a revered honor, you kinda got to have some kind of independent body that is just, like, &#8216;hey, president, here’s where we go.'&#8221;

On Wednesday, USA Today <a href="https://www.usatoday.com/story/news/politics/elections/2025/01/08/joe-biden-interview-transcript/77490912007/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">published</a> a transcript of an interview that its Washington Bureau chief, Susan Page, conducted with the 82-year-old Biden over the weekend.  &#8220;Do you think you would&#8217;ve had the vigor to serve another four years in office?&#8221; Page asked.
Biden hearkened back to his winning 2020 campaign, making references to his old boss — former President <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/barack-obama" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Barack Obama</a> — and his son, Beau Biden, who died of brain cancer in 2015. He also mentioned President-elect <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/donald-trump" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Donald Trump</a>, who won the 2024 contest.
&#8220;I don&#8217;t know,&#8221; the president said in his response. &#8220;That&#8217;s why I thought when I first announced, talking to Barack about it, I said I thought I was the person. I had no intention of running after Beau died – for real, not a joke. And then when Trump was running again for reelection, I really thought I had the best chance of beating him.&#8221;
He added: &#8220;But I also wasn&#8217;t looking to be president when I was 85 years old, 86 years old. And so I did talk about passing the baton. But I don&#8217;t know. Who the hell knows? So far, so good. But who knows what I&#8217;m going to be when I&#8217;m 86 years old?&#8221;
Earlier, Page pressed Biden on whether he believed he could have defeated Trump, who he did beat in 2020. &#8220;Do you believe you could have won in November?&#8221; Page asked.

Two men sitting on death row refuse to sign the paperwork that would have their death sentences commuted to life imprisonment, which President Joe Biden ordered. The two men filed emergency motions to block their commutations, as they said such an action would deprive them of efforts to prove their innocence.
Shannon Agofsky, 53, and Len Davis, 60, are sitting on death row at the U.S. Penitentiary in Terre Haute, Indiana.
&#8220;To commute his sentence now, while the defendant has active litigation in court, is to strip him of the protection of heightened scrutiny. This constitutes an undue burden, and leaves the defendant in a position of fundamental unfairness, which would decimate his pending appellate procedures,” Agofsky&#8217;s motion states, according to <a href="https://www.nbcnews.com/news/us-news/two-death-row-inmates-reject-bidens-commutation-life-sentences-rcna186235" target="_blank" rel="noopener">NBC News</a>.
Davis “has always maintained that having a death sentence would draw attention to the overwhelming misconduct” allegedly taken by the Justice Department, his motion states.

A fellow officer informed Davis of Groves’ complaint against him, which she filed with Internal Affairs. “FBI tapes, obtained after Davis allegedly was hired as a muscleman in a bogus drug ring run by undercover federal agents, showed Davis exultant after Hardy told him Groves was dead,” NOLA <a href="https://www.nola.com/news/crime_police/article_72b8b9a4-059a-5b2c-8ee5-252c398925d1.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">reported</a>.

President-elect Donald Trump signaled on Monday that he will quickly reverse President Joe Biden&#8217;s &#8216;ridiculous&#8217; policy moves from his final days in office.
Trump made the remarks during an interview with conservative radio host Hugh Hewitt while talking about Biden&#8217;s decision this week to ban new oil and gas leasing across 625 million acres of U.S. ocean.
&#8220;It’s ridiculous. I’ll unban it immediately. I will unban it. I have the right to unban it immediately,&#8221; Trump said. &#8220;What’s he doing? Why is he doing it?&#8221;
&#8220;We have oil and gas at a level that nobody else has. “The View” host <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/sunny-hostin">Sunny Hostin</a> said she didn’t want to move on from what happened on <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/january-6">January 6th, 2021</a>, and compared it to World War II, the Holocaust, and slavery.
During the <a href="https://x.com/theblaze/status/1876312352108564833">ABC talk show</a> on Monday, Hostin said the country needed to find “moral clarity” and said the blame for what happened on January 6th, 2021, at the U.S. Capitol needed to be placed at the feet of President-elect Donald Trump.
“You don&#8217;t move on because January 6th was an atrocity,” Hostin claimed. “It was one of the worst moments in American history. And when you think about the worst moments in American history like World War II, things that happened like the Holocaust, chattel slavery.&#8221;

“We need to never forget,” Hostin continued. “Because past becomes prologue if you forget any race.”
The audience agreed and clapped along at the host’s comments and several of the people on the panel agreed as well.
Hostin’s cohost Sarah Haines <a href="https://x.com/TheView/status/1876335580226712046">suggested</a> that what happened on January 6th should be “commemorated every year” because watching those videos “shook” her to the core, suggesting that future generations won’t know about what happened four years ago unless people continue to make sure it is talked about.

“And hopefully, every year we will continue to show video of January 6, cause I won’t tell you how to feel, you just watch that video and you tell me what you see,” Haines said, without explaining further. 
On Sunday in a <a href="https://www.washingtonpost.com/opinions/2025/01/05/president-biden-jan-6-democracy/">Washington Post</a> Op-Ed, President Joe Biden also urged Americans to not forget about what happened on January 6th four years ago, labeling it a day when “violent insurrectionists attacked the Capitol.”
“We should be proud that our democracy withstood this assault,” Biden wrote. “And we should be glad we will not see such a shameful attack again this year. But we should not forget. We must remember the wisdom of the adage that any nation that forgets its past is doomed to repeat it. We cannot accept a repeat of what occurred four years ago.&#8221;
He also wrote that the “unrelenting effort” that’s “underway to rewrite — even erase — the history of that day” must not succeed, adding that “we cannot allow the truth to be lost.”

Around three million retired public workers will receive increased Social Security benefits after President Joe Biden signed the Social Security Fairness Act on Sunday.
The bill paves the way for retired police officers, firefighters, teachers, nurses, and others who collect pension income to receive increases in their Social Security payments, CNBC <a href="https://www.cnbc.com/2025/01/05/biden-signs-social-security-bill-to-increase-benefits-for-millions-of-public-workers.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">reported</a>. The Social Security Fairness Act repeals the Windfall Elimination Provision (WEP) and the Government Pension Offset (GPO), which — for more than 40 years — reduced Social Security benefits for public sector workers and their spouses who receive a pension or disability benefits from a job where Social Security payroll taxes were not withheld.
“By signing this bill, we’re extending Social Security benefits for millions of teachers, nurses, and other public employees and their spouses and survivors,” Biden said. “That means an estimated average of $360 per month increase.”
The president added that around 2.5 million Americans will receive a lump-sum payment to make up for a shortfall in benefits they should have received last year. The Social Security Administration (SSA) said in a <a href="https://www.ssa.gov/benefits/retirement/social-security-fairness-act.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">statement</a> on Monday that it is &#8220;evaluating how to implement&#8221; the bill signed by Biden and &#8220;will provide more information as soon as available.&#8221;
The bill will add $196 billion to the federal deficit, according to the Congressional Budget Office, Fox Business <a href="https://www.foxbusiness.com/politics/millions-get-higher-social-security-payments-under-new-law" target="_blank" rel="noopener">reported</a>. Critics of the bill, which was passed by Congress with bipartisan support, argue that it will only cause more issues for Social Security in the future. Sen. Chuck Grassley (R-IA) <a href="https://www.usatoday.com/story/money/2025/01/06/benefits-social-security-fairness-act/77483465007/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">said</a> that the Social Security Fairness Act unfairly benefits some workers while creating more of a burden that others will have to pick up.
&#8220;Let’s be crystal clear: this bill would increase unfairness in how Social Security benefits are calculated,&#8221; Grassley said on the Senate floor last month.

The WEP reduced Social Security benefits for workers with a public pension if they also held a job in the private sector. The WEP was crafted to prevent public sector workers from &#8220;double-dipping&#8221; from a government pension and Social Security, according to Fox Business. The GPO, meanwhile, reduced Social Security benefits for spouses, widows, and widowers who have their own government pensions.
Those who called for the repeal of the WEP and GPO argue that public sector employees who had their Social Security benefits reduced were not receiving &#8220;the full Social Security benefits they’ve earned.&#8221;
Biden acknowledged that the Social Security system needs more work and argued that the &#8220;wealthiest Americans [must] begin to pay their fair share so it&#8217;s able to be maintained and so much more.&#8221;
More changes to Social Security could be coming shortly as Congress&#8217; timeline to implement major Social Security reform continues to shrink. According to the SSA, the program&#8217;s trust fund reserves will be depleted by 2035, meaning if Congress doesn&#8217;t act, retirees will only <a href="https://www.cnbc.com/select/will-social-security-run-out-heres-what-you-need-to-know/#:~:text=The%20financial%20future%20of%20the,the%20Social%20Security%20payroll%20tax." target="_blank" rel="noopener">receive</a> 83% of their full benefits after 2035.

Last week, Biden&#8217;s Surgeon General Vivek Murthy issued an <a href="https://www.hhs.gov/about/news/2025/01/03/us-surgeon-general-issues-new-advisory-link-alcohol-cancer-risk.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">advisory</a> “outlining the direct link between alcohol consumption and increased cancer risk.” Murthy wants health warnings on all alcohol products that mention cancer risk, as well as “a reassessment of the guideline limits for alcohol consumption to account for cancer risk.”

As The Daily Wire <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/no-donald-trump-isnt-coming-for-your-tequila-but-kamala-might-be" target="_blank" rel="noopener">reported</a> in October, a secret committee working deep behind the scenes of the Biden administration is working to revise federal dietary guidelines regarding alcohol. The Interagency Coordinating Committee on the Prevention of Underage Drinking (ICCPUD) is a six-person panel working within the Department of Health and Human Services. But instead of just trying to keep kids from drinking, this panel <a href="https://tomwark.substack.com/p/no-amount-alcohol-healthy" target="_blank" rel="noopener">reportedly</a> wants the United States to adopt the World Health Organization’s <a href="https://www.who.int/europe/news/item/04-01-2023-no-level-of-alcohol-consumption-is-safe-for-our-health" target="_blank" rel="noopener">position</a> that “no level of alcohol consumption is safe for our health.”
Now, I love an “I told you so” moment as much as the next keyboard warrior. But this is no reason to gloat. The bureaucracy’s push to stop Americans from drinking is a dangerous development, and not just because it’s profoundly lame. It’s the latest sign of how leftists want to use the government to meddle in Americans’ daily lives. And it’s not even based on real science.
Murthy notes that “alcohol is a well-established, preventable cause of cancer responsible for about 100,000 cases of cancer and 20,000 cancer deaths annually in the United States.” He further notes that “for breast cancer specifically, 16.4% of total breast cancer cases are attributable to alcohol consumption.”
Much like Supreme Court Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson, <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/im-not-a-biologist-supreme-court-nominee-says-she-cant-define-the-word-woman" target="_blank" rel="noopener">I’m not a biologist.</a> So I have no reason to doubt these statistics. But whenever a government official starts calling for a total ban on anything for my own good, I get suspicious. Banning things that can be unhealthy when consumed in excess is the first step towards nanny statism and universal health care. It’s downright European.
Or, in this case, Canadian. As we previously reported, three of the ICCPUD’s six members are Canadians who helped slash the number of recommended drinks in their frozen homeland back in 2013. That recommendation didn’t even play well in Canada, a country that has basically thrown its hands up and accepted euthanasia and leaders like Justin Trudeau as inevitabilities.
The mere presence of Canadian health bureaucrats should be enough to disqualify whatever the ICCPUD recommends. But there’s also a <a href="https://www.nationalacademies.org/news/2024/12/new-report-reviews-evidence-on-moderate-alcohol-consumption-and-health-impacts" target="_blank" rel="noopener">new study</a> from the National Academies of Science, Engineering, and Math, which found that “compared with never consuming alcohol, moderate alcohol consumption is associated with lower all-cause mortality.”
That study is hardly biased towards alcohol. In fact, it includes the same cancer statistics that Murthy cites in his advisory. But it also looks at other areas, and finds that moderate alcohol consumption is associated with a lower risk of both heart attack and stroke, compared to never drinking at all.

There’s also a recent <a href="https://harvardpublichealth.org/policy-practice/is-alcohol-bad-for-you-or-is-alcohol-good-for-you-yes/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Harvard study</a> that found moderate drinking lowered blood sugar and was associated with lower rates of diabetes as well as lower rates of “thyroid cancer, non-Hodgkin lymphoma, and renal cell carcinoma.” Looking at the whole board, the authors conclude that “the data do not justify sweeping statements about the [negative] effects of moderate alcohol consumption on human health.”
Murthy probably won’t get his warning labels. Such a change would require congressional approval, and if the <a href="https://www.politico.com/news/2025/01/03/surgeon-general-alcohol-cancer-congress-00196399" target="_blank" rel="noopener">bipartisan opposition</a> to the new drinking guidelines is any indication, it seems unlikely that Congress would vote to slap cancer warnings on liquor bottles.
But Murthy’s advisory is telling nonetheless. Biden is packing up the Oval Office, and his Surgeon General is trying to bring back Prohibition. That would be shocking, if his boss wasn’t spending this time trying to <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/exclusive-biden-races-to-sell-off-border-wall-parts-before-trump-takes-office" target="_blank" rel="noopener">sell off pieces</a> of the border wall, <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/disgraceful-decision-trump-press-secretary-blasts-bidens-move-to-block-more-offshore-drilling?topStoryPosition=2" target="_blank" rel="noopener">stop offshore drilling</a>, and smuggle in all sorts of policies that would hamstring the incoming Trump administration.
It’s a troubling reminder of how Democrats act when they have power, and of what their priorities will be the next time they take the White House. Fortunately, we won’t have to deal with that for at least the next four years.

Japanese steelmaker Nippon Steel and U.S. Steel sued the Biden administration on Monday for blocking a proposed acquisition.
The companies filed two lawsuits in district courts in Washington, D.C., and Pennsylvania, accusing the federal government of denying the companies due process. The legal filings say President Joe Biden decided against the companies in favor of union interests without full consideration of national security, according to a <a href="https://investors.ussteel.com/news-events/news-releases/detail/709/nippon-steel-and-u-s-steel-file-multiple-lawsuits-in" target="_blank" rel="noopener">statement</a> by the companies.
“From the outset of the process, both Nippon Steel and U. S. Steel have engaged in good faith with all parties to underscore how the Transaction will enhance, not threaten, United States national security, including by revitalizing communities that rely on American steel, bolstering the American steel supply chain, and strengthening America’s domestic steel industry against the threat from China,” Nippon Steel and U.S. Steel said.
As part of the agreement, Nippon Steel committed to investing $2.7 billion in the U.S. “to protect and grow U. S. Steel for the benefit of employees, the communities in which it operates, and the entire American steel industry.” Biden’s decision kills that investment and a $55-per-share payout due to U.S. Steel shareholders upon completion of the deal.
The lawsuits allege that the Committee on Foreign Investment in the United States did not investigate the national security interests at stake in the potential deal before Biden delivered his judgment.

Last week, the White House announced that it blocked the potential acquisition due to concerns about U.S. national security and supply chains.
“It is my solemn responsibility as President to ensure that, now and long into the future, America has a strong domestically owned and operated steel industry that can continue to power our national sources of strength at home and abroad; and it is a fulfillment of that responsibility to block foreign ownership of this vital American company,” Biden <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/biden-blocks-sale-of-u-s-steel-to-japanese-company" target="_blank" rel="noopener">said</a> in a statement. “U.S. Steel will remain a proud American company – one that’s American-owned, American-operated, by American union steelworkers – the best in the world.”
President-elect Donald Trump has also opposed the deal, saying in a statement last month that he was “totally against the once great and powerful U.S. Steel being bought by a foreign company.”
The steelmakers say that, in addition to Biden’s political calculations, the acquisition’s failure is due to collusion between the Workers International Union (USW) and Cleveland-Cliffs, an Ohio-based steelmaker that previously attempted to buy U.S. Steel. That offer was rejected.
